When we join Brandi, she's already struggling. Her husband
recently
died, leaving her alone with barely a penny to her name, trying
to raise
a teenage son she had a little too young (just before her
sixteenth
birthday, in fact) and a toddler she and Skip decided to have,
together.
It's not that Brandi's unhappy, it's more that this isn't
the
ideal life she hoped she'd have one day, and it sure as hell
isn't the
life she wants for her son.
Dustin's a sweet kid, he really is, but every now and again
Brandi
catches him doing or saying things that aren't quite...right.
[Brandi, off-screen] Dustin...
To Brandi, Dustin seems erratic, acting out in the hope of...
what?
Getting his father's attention? Brandi wishes it was that
simple. He's a
rebellious soul, and sometimes he comes home with bruises on his
face or
other marks she doesn't know how to ask about.
In another life, she'd be a better mom, she's sure of it. But
she's
barely holding it together even now.
Oh, god damnit, kid.
What're you thinking?
It isn't like she can exactly judge. She wasn't all that better
at his
age, or... younger, she supposes. It's part of growing up in a
place
like this.
Dustin's a good kid.
He's just going through a lot right now.
[Brandi, off-screen] BEAU WHAT THE FUCK--
On the other side of
things, is Beau.
Brandi doesn't think she's raising a tiny pyromaniac, but
she's
also not positive she isn't raising a tiny pyromaniac.
Things
have been... not quite right around the house ever since he
learned to
walk, let alone now he's starting to talk too.
[Brandi] Fuck! Fuck!
[Dustin] It's okay, mom. Think about the insurance
pay-out!
For all Brandi thinks of her sons, the truth is they aren't
doing quite
as badly as she thinks.
Dustin, sure, he's working four jobs as well as attending and
almost
failing high-school, but he's also madly in love with his
girlfriend,
Angela.
[Dustin] Let's practice for prom!
[Angela] That's a new one!
Really, it could be
worse.
Even if their deceased father doesn't exactly ever leave them
alone...
